Quarter 1: Socratic Seminars Students will discover what it means to "effectively engage" in a collaborative discussion. Activities will cover discussion terms, discussion stems, open-ending questioning and will culminate in a Socratic Seminar about a related fiction/non-fiction pair of texts.
Quarter 2: National Park Research Project Students will research and create a promotional product for a National Park. |

Byrdseed TV's Analyzing Movies' Success Students will investigate the box office returns and critical acclaim of a set of movies. After gathering their data, they'll graph it on a coordinate plane and look for trends and outliers, and then make a prediction. They'll also create line graphs and use this data to decide if another movie in the series should be made.
Volume Project Students will use their understanding of volume in a project of their choice: Pool, Laptops, Zoo Triangle Sums Magic Squares Students analyze the math behind "Magic Squares". They will use their knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals to complete a variety of Magic Squares. Zaccaro Challenge Math Multi-step Challenge problems Legos Students will estimate the cost of materials to build the world's largest tower? Yummy Math The Great Thanksgiving Challenge Using grocery store flyers, websites, and coupons, students will put their decimal computation skills to use and compete to create the cheapest (but complete) Thanksgiving Menu for their family and friends. |

What's Your Opinion? In collaboration with Q3 EL unit, students will expand their knowledge of opinion writing by researching for and participating in a debate.

Decimal Challenge Math (Zaccaro) Word problems involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals.
Filling up a Car with Other Liquids Students will use their knowledge of decimals to compare the cost of filling up a car with a liquid other than gasoline. Magic Squares Students will use their knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals to complete a variety of Magic Squares. The Lemonade Business Students will use the understanding of multiplication of fractions to find the value of parts of a whole. They must apply this understanding to problems regarding a lemonade business. Fraction Challenge Math (Zaccaro) Word problems involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. |
